Transport Machines

The Bicycle

During the restoration of the Codex Atlanticus in the 1960's this drawing was found on the reverse of a torn sheet that had been pasted to mountings in the sixteenth century and therefore had not been seen for more than three hundred and sixty years.

It must have been copied by Leonardo's apprentice Salai (whose name is the only word on the sheet) from one of his master's drawings.

The model on the right is on display in the Leonardo Museum in Vinci.

The Car

This clockwork cart is driven by a system of leaf springs connected to gears and powered by a trip hammer.

The picture on the right shows a model from the Leonardo Museum.

The Flying Ship

Most will have seen Leonardo's designs for his "aerial screw" (helicopter) and the single-man ornithopter but here he goes a step further and imagines aerial transport for a number of persons.  Leonardo's mind always seemed to push the limits of imagination to create yet more surprising and astonishing concepts.
